Tips - Hints - Music - Clothing

Q: What footwear should I bring to my first dance lesson?
A: Wear comfortable shoes, of course.  No tennis shoes if possible, these will be sticky on wood dance floors (the treads are designed to do just that) and could catch and cause you to trip.  For men, a smooth leather bottom shoe such as a work loafer or cowboy boots works best.  For women, smooth leather or smooth rubber bottom dance or evening shoes (without tread) that attaches the heel to the ankle, are a must. Ladies leather bottom loafers are ok...but don't wear flip-flops or mules. These types of shoes can come off  of your feet and be difficult to move in, or fall off easily and trip other students!  Bringing along and breaking in the shoes you will be wearing at the wedding is an option, if these can be cleaned effectively if they get "stepped on" or "floor dust" on them.

Q: What clothing should I wear to my wedding dance lesson?
A: Make sure to wear comfortable clothes that are cool and move easily.  You do not need to "Dress up"  but sweats, worn out clothing, and shirts or jackets with "questionable" sayings, logos or photos, might be inappropriate around the other couples that will be attending the class.  Also... please adhere to standard rules of hygiene.  :-)

Q: What about the first dance music?
A: We suggest that the couple choose a song that has special meaning for them or has been a part of their courtship or family.  However, if you would like help choosing your music, we will make suggestions and help you prepare for your wedding first dance. In group class, you will get to hear the music that other couples bring... and what we use as standards for our teaching music. All this can help you to decide on a genre, or even a song.

Q: How far in advance should we begin our wedding classes or lessons?
A: Plan to start your lessons a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 3 months prior to your wedding reception. This will allow you plenty of time to practice. Many couples put dance lessons off until the last possible moment. This can put a lot of stress on the bride and groom, for something that should be really enjoyable for you and the guests!

Q: If we did wait until the last minute, what should we do?
A: Private lessons will be your only option.  Although it might be a little harder, we can "cram",  in the last week or two before your wedding reception.  Click on "Contact Us" for information on how to book private lessons.
